The Sand Beach Dance Hall
The Sand Beach Dance Hall was located on Sand Beach (which is now at the end
of Harris Harbor Drive at Green Cove). The hall was once one of the largest in the area. The first
floor was used as bath lockers, concessions and amusements (penny slot machines) while the entire second floor was a dance
floor. Sand Beach was prominent during the "big Band" era and the roster of big named bands that played there
would fill a book.
The dance hall burned in the summer of 1944. Soldiers from Camp Perry were inside doing
something when the hall caught fire. It was not being used as a dance hall at that time. There was a hotel across
the bridge from the hall where people could stay. I am not sure where this was located. ( It maybe where the lodge house
is on the channel) or it may have been the lodge. It was told that only the well to do would come to the hall to dance
because you had to pay a fee for each dance. One of the local ladies used to work at the hall washing table cloths which
she scrubbed on a scrubbing board and the she would iron them with a roller.
Information is pretty sketchy
about the hall. If you have information or know of anyone that has information please write me at chucksnider2@hotmail.com. It would be great to have a large history about the place.
